About

Hank Willis Thomas at Ford Foundation Live Gallery is a gallery exhibition of new works by artist Hank Willis Thomas, on view from September 16, 2026 into January 2027. Thomas, trained as a photographer, reinterprets archival images with new or rarely used technical processes, and viewers often must shift position or use a tool such as a camera flash to experience the whole work. The three works shown use 1940s photographs from U.S. government agencies of schoolchildren, many of Japanese descent, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and their titles reference the Supreme Court's ruling in Ex parte Mitsuye Endo. The works examine what it means to be American and how we reconcile the contradictions of history and national identity.
