Exhibition of Classical and Historical Fencing: live demos.
Grand Exhibition of Classical and Historical Fencing
About
The Grand Exhibition of Classical and Historical Fencing is an exhibition of cultural artifacts paired with live demonstrations of fencing and a talk of anecdotes from important fencing events. It takes the audience back to the Gilded Age in New York City, when the Brooklyn Bridge first opened, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled, the Waldorf Astoria and Carnegie Hall opened, and the New York Public Library was founded, and wealthy families such as the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers shaped the city's growth, making fencing a fashionable pastime. It looks at the equipment of the era, such as foils, gloves, masks, and jackets sold at stores like Peck and Snyder, Spalding, and J.H. Lau & Co., and at how growing interest in sports for health led many women to take up the art and science. The public is cordially invited to attend, and doors open at 2:15pm.
