About
Women of Emanu-El: Gilded Age Tour is a walking tour through the Upper East Side of Manhattan, led by historian Bradley Shaw, from the Plaza Hotel on 59th Street to The Metropolitan Museum of Art on 82nd Street. It explores how the so-called "Captains of Industry," or robber barons, such as Vanderbilt, Astor, Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan, flaunted their wealth with opulent mansions near Fifth Avenue and Central Park. It also highlights prominent Jewish Gilded Age families, including the Adlers, Guggenheims, Pulitzers, Strauses, and Warburgs, who built grand homes on the Upper East Side. Many mansions survived only until the 1930s, when apartment buildings replaced them, though some still stand; an optional lunch follows the tour.
