About

The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art holds the opening of the exhibition 'PROPS from Barakei: Eikoh Hosoe and Jason Wee', curated by Yasufumi Nakamori. The show centers on Jason Wee's new commissioned sculptural installation and performance, made in response to Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe's series Barakei (Ordeal by Roses), which staged images of novelist Yukio Mishima in Tokyo between 1961 and 1962. Wee's work focuses on the props from those photographs—a garden hose, a mallet, a candle, a painterly backdrop—presented as metal and fabric prints within a spiral of rope encoded from a lecture script audible on headphones. The exhibition also traces Hosoe's photographs across three editions of the 1963 photobook Barakei, designed by Kohei Sugiura, Tadanori Yokoo, and Kiyoshi Awazu.
