About
The annual Heuss Lecture, a talk hosted by the Executive Dean's Office of The New School for Social Research, features Manuela Boatcă presenting "Otherwise Modern Subjects: Enslaved Roma in the Making of European Romania". Her lecture traces two nineteenth-century uses of the name 'Romania': France's 'New Romania' for Romance-speaking Catholic countries in the Americas, and the nation-building project uniting Moldavia and Wallachia. Drawing on Michel-Rolph Trouillot's notion of 'the otherwise modern', she connects the abolition of the five-hundred-year enslavement of Roma people in those territories with global regimes of enslavement and white nationalist projects in a transatlantic dialogue on slavery and abolition.
