Jakub Tomáš Five String Serenade
Asya Geisberg Gallery, West 23rd Street 537b, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
"Five String Serenade" is a solo exhibition of paintings by the Czech artist Jakub Tomáš, his second with Asya Geisberg Gallery. Tomáš builds his paintings from small paper models made of magazine and internet fragments, arranged like stage sets before being enlarged into uncanny scenes of figures with doubled eyes, odd angles and mismatched features. His Czech influences of puppetry, stop-motion animation and carnival masks show through, as people in his pictures play guitar, frolic in nature or grapple with sculptural engines once the technology is removed.
