La Bola Negra
About
La Bola Negra is a Spanish film following three generations of men whose lives are connected through desire, pain, and love across pivotal moments in Spanish history: 1932, 1937, and 2017. It was made by Cannes-winning directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis, who co-wrote it with Alberto Conejero and adapted it from Conejero's play La piedra oscura and texts by Federico García Lorca, the Spanish playwright assassinated in 1936 whose legacy the film explores. The cast includes Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, and special appearances by Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. The film won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Audience Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and is Spain's official submission for the International Feature prize at the Academy Awards.

Critics
7.6Very good
Critics praise the film's bold multi-timeline structure, striking imagery, emotional power and recovery of Spain's queer history, calling it dazzling and richly crafted. Some fault its sprawling, undisciplined melodrama, overlong length and heavy-handed, overwrought storytelling.
