Light and Stone: Revisiting Noguchi’s 1986 Venice Biennale
The Noguchi Museum, 33rd Road 9-01, 11106 Long Island City, Queens
About
'Light and Stone: Revisiting Noguchi’s 1986 Venice Biennale' is a single-gallery archival presentation at The Noguchi Museum, on view in Area 5 of the first floor from May 6, 2026 to May 9, 2027. Marking the fortieth anniversary of Isamu Noguchi’s U.S. Pavilion at the 1986 Venice Biennale, it examines his exhibition 'What Is Sculpture?' through materials from the Museum’s collection and archive. The show revisits Noguchi’s practice through archival photographs, architectural sketches, a model for the monumental marble spiral slide Slide Mantra, and Akari light sculptures. It is organized to coincide with the 2026 Venice Biennale, where the Museum partners with The Japan Foundation on selected works in an audience participatory exhibition by Japanese American artist Ei Arakawa-Nash.
