About

A free public conversation at The Noguchi Museum marking the 40th anniversary of Isamu Noguchi's 1986 presentation in the United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. It brings together Alanna Heiss, who commissioned Noguchi's exhibition What Is Sculpture?, and sculptor Martin Puryear, who represented the United States at the 2019 Venice Biennale with Liberty/Libertà. Moderated by Hitomi Iwasaki, the discussion considers what it means to represent America on an international stage and how artists' cultural backgrounds, racial identities, and personal histories inform that question. It is presented alongside the museum's exhibitions Light and Stone: Revisiting Noguchi's 1986 Venice Biennale and No Ordinary Light: Akari at 75; space is limited and reservations are required by email.
