About
No Ordinary Light: Akari at 75 is an exhibition at The Noguchi Museum marking the 75th anniversary of Akari, Isamu Noguchi's light sculptures. It explores the enduring significance of these works, which Noguchi began creating in 1951 after a visit to Gifu inspired him to reimagine traditional Japanese chochin lanterns using paper, bamboo, electric bulbs, and modern wire bases. Over three decades Noguchi made more than 200 models of these "luminous sculptures," which he named Akari, the Japanese word for light, evoking illumination and weightlessness. The exhibition traces how Noguchi presented Akari throughout his career, placing them in dialogue with sculptures in stone, metal, and clay, in settings from domestic interiors to monumental installations.
