Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman
Gladstone Gallery, West 21st Street 530, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
"Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman" is an exhibition featuring 17 artists who work with both analog and emergent technologies to visualize the interrelationship between humanity, other species, and the earth itself. Organized by the Frist Art Museum, it presents artists such as Ian Cheng, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Marguerite Humeau, Josèfa Ntjam, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Saya Woolfalk, who use digital animation, augmented and virtual reality, motion capture, and generative software to challenge the view that human exceptionalism allows us to ignore caring for the more-than-human world. The exhibition unfolds in three sections: one biological and ecological, focused on extinction, evolution, and interspecies entanglement; one psychological, with playful stories of metamorphosis; and one ontological, bridging ancestral and contemporary belief systems to reawaken humanity's sense of interconnectedness with the earth.
