Talk: Gravitational Waves and Black Holes
ETH Zürich, Sonneggstrasse 5, 8006 Zürich, Rieden
About
A talk about gravitational waves and black holes, explaining what happens when black holes merge and how ripples in space-time can be measured billions of light-years away. The speaker is Prof. Dr. Michele Vallisneri, Professor of Gravitational Physics at ETH Zurich and Scientific Director of the Swiss Data Centre for ESA's LISA space mission. Albert Einstein predicted gravitational waves over a hundred years ago, but they were first directly detected in 2015 – a milestone that opened a completely new window onto the universe. The talk shows how gravitational waves expand our understanding of gravity, black holes and the evolution of the universe.
