About
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes is a feature film about a Spanish conquistador expedition in the 16th century that rafts down the unexplored headwaters of the Amazon in Peru in search of the legendary land of gold, El Dorado. After a mutiny, Don Lope de Aguirre takes command with an iron fist, driving the exhausted party ever deeper into the merciless jungle as he succumbs to boundless megalomania in his quest for wealth, power and a place in history. As nature and the jungle's inhabitants prove hostile, disaster draws inexorably closer. Werner Herzog directed; the cast includes Klaus Kinski, Del Negro, Helena Rojo, Ruy Guerra and Peter Berling.

Critics praise the hypnotic imagery, the haunting atmosphere and Kinski's intense performance, calling the film a masterpiece. Some fault the theatrical, stiff acting, which they feel fails to convey deeper meaning.
