About
blackmilk is a dance solo by Tiran Willemse and the first part of his Trompoppies trilogy, named after the Afrikaans word for drum majorettes in uniform. Willemse adopts gestural-expressive movement material and links precise hand gestures from Trompoppies formation dances with melodramatic poses of white starlets and gestures associated with Black rap stars. The solo intervenes in the representation of Black masculinity and opens it to a complexity and sensitivity that he describes as "black male melancholia". It is presented as part of the Emerging Change dance festival, which celebrates the work of queer, trans, Black, indigenous and BIPoC dance artists.
