Der neue Himmel über Esna. Die astronomische Decke des Chnumtempels
James-Simon-Galerie, Berlin, Mitte
Teilnahme frei.
About
A lecture by Christian Leitz (Tübingen) on the astronomical ceiling of the Temple of Khnum in the pronaos of Esna, one of the last examples of ancient Egyptian temple architecture, decorated mainly during the Roman period. Since 2018, the University of Tübingen has been cleaning the soot-covered pronaos together with the Egyptian ministry of antiquities; the ceiling and columns now appear in bright colours, and almost 200 previously unseen ink inscriptions came to light. The lecture presents all six ceiling sections: the path of the sun and moon, the decans, known and unknown Egyptian constellations, and the twelve zodiac signs. Admission is free, no registration required.
