About
The tandem guided tour "Flucht damals und heute" takes place at the Erinnerungsstätte Notaufnahmelager Marienfelde, a museum about flight and emigration from the GDR that also serves as a transitional home for around 700 refugees. Between 1949 and 1990, around four million people left the GDR, many of them through the reception camp in West Berlin, known as the "gate to freedom". The tour brings two perspectives into dialogue: the historical view of the camp and a current view of the residential home's daily operations, represented by a social worker who came to Berlin in 2011 at the age of 17 and spent her first years living here herself. It also grants access to the camp's historic grounds, which are otherwise closed during regular museum operations, and takes place as part of the Berlin Freedom Week 2026.
