GABRIELE SAUERLAND: IN / TENSION
BBA Gallery, Köpenicker Straße 96 10179 Berlin
About
"IN / TENSION" is a solo exhibition of painting by Berlin-based artist Gabriele Sauerland at BBA Gallery. Her works move between figuration and abstraction and are made without brushes, using spatulas, diverse materials and full physical engagement on canvas, cardboard, paper and wood. For the artist, the title names the fleeting moment between inner impulse and outer reality in which an image comes into being, and plays on the double meaning of material "tension" and the artist's "intention." Themes such as violence, war, scarcity and exhaustion – in works like "Femicide", "Apocalyptic Horse - Scales" or "Heavy Head" – flow from social issues and biographical experiences into the densely layered, raw paintings.
