About
„Heimsuchung“ is a theatre production staged on the stage of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. It is based on the 2007 novel by Berlin author Jenny Erpenbeck and has been adapted by Alexander Eisenach, who also directs; it premiered on 23 January 2026. At its centre is a plot of land on the Scharmützelsee lake in Brandenburg with a summer house in which the history of the 20th century is reflected: in eleven chapters, three generations of inhabitants are told about, including an architect successful under the Nazi era, a deported Jewish cloth manufacturer, a company of the Red Army and the heirs after the end of the GDR, while a timeless gardener tends the property. The piece, which in a way is a history book that makes the complexity of history palpable, lasts 2 hours 45 minutes with one intermission and is performed by the theatre's ensemble with live music.
