Hiddensee
About
The documentary „Hiddensee“ portrays the small Baltic Sea island, only 17 kilometres long, as a place of longing for freedom where sunbathers, nudists, artists, punks and celebrities have always flocked. The award-winning director Annekatrin Hendel travels through an entire century back to the golden 1920s, when the intellectual avant-garde, such as Asta Nielsen and Gerhart Hauptmann, made their home on the island. Then as now, Hiddensee is marked by political upheavals playing out across the whole country – Germany in miniature. In hypnotically beautiful black-and-white images, several interwoven storylines lead to a portrait that is as poetic as it is unsettling, reaching far beyond the legendary island.
