About
This event is a case study on filmmaking in Haiti. It centres on Wilmarc Val, who left Haiti at the age of four and grew up in France, and whose films take him back to his roots, his family history and questions of origin, faith and identity. Since 2019 – perhaps even since independence in 1804 – Haiti has been in a deep political, social and structural crisis, yet among a new generation of filmmakers the desire to make films there seems stronger than ever. Here, filmmaking becomes a form of return, despite the uncertainty that continues to characterise Haiti to this day.
