About
The Maria Baptist Orchestra is a sixteen-piece European jazz orchestra with a symphonic signature whose Berlin concert series has achieved cult status over more than a decade and 110 performances. Behind it is composer, conductor and pianist Maria Baptist, who blends jazz and classical music into her own multi-layered sonic cosmos: fugues, concertos and suites weave seamlessly into jazz improvisations. The orchestra has earned multiple nominations for the German Record Critics' Award, most recently for the album The Bright and the Dark. The US publication All About Jazz places Maria Baptist's compositions in a league with Maria Schneider, George Gruntz, Jim McNeely and Carla Bley.
