Stefan Rinke on the democracies Tocqueville overlooked.
Über die Demokratien in Amerika, oder: Was Tocqueville nicht interessierte
About
A German-language lecture in the Simón-Bolívar Hall of the Ibero-American Institute. Stefan Rinke of Freie Universität Berlin asks what Alexis de Tocqueville overlooked in his analysis of American democracy: the democracies of Latin America. The talk is part of the series '250 Years of US Independence: Hemispheric Perspectives' and the 'We the People' initiative of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. Among its themes are the violence of slavery and settler colonialism, indigenous political orders, the Haitian Revolution, and the limits of political participation by gender, skin color and property.
