About
A concert of English Baroque sacred music, performed by Arcangelo with a group of eight singers. Directed by Jonathan Cohen from the harpsichord, the programme, titled 'An English Baroque Journey I: Sacred Music – 'The Music More Full Than It Was'', explores works connected with England's Chapel Royal in the years before and after Oliver Cromwell's Republic. It takes in emotionally-charged anthems by Pelham Humfrey, Maurice Greene and Matthew Locke, alongside pieces by Christopher Gibbons, John Blow and Henry Purcell, and ends with Handel's majestic setting of words from the Book of Psalms. The title recalls Samuel Pepys, who after attending a Chapel Royal service in 1662 noted how 'the music was more full than it was', referring to improvements made since the restoration of Charles II.
