Film
South by South: Jessica Beshir's films Hairat and Faya Dayi.
About
An evening screening of two films by Mexican-Ethiopian filmmaker Jessica Beshir: the short 'Hairat', about a man in Harar who has bonded with hyenas for over thirty-five years, and 'Faya Dayi', a hypnotic blend of documentary and drama about the rituals and trade of the stimulant leaf Khat in Ethiopia. The films were programmed by A Month of Single Frames, a film collective led by Ufuoma Essi, Sam Williams and Tendai Mutambu dedicated to artists' moving image, with this event curated by South East London artist and filmmaker Ufuoma Essi. The screening contains depictions of drug use and addiction and themes of violence and political repression.
