About
Gem of the Ocean is a play at the Young Vic, the first UK staging in 20 years of August Wilson's work. Directed by Nadia Fall, it is part of a ten-play chronicle of the African-American experience in the twentieth century. Set in Pittsburgh's Hill District in the early 1900s, it follows Aunt Ester, who welcomes Solly Two Kings and a young man from Alabama searching for redemption, on a lyrical journey of spiritual awakening. It is a searing exploration of resistance, redemption, race, justice and the enduring search for freedom.
