About
'Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires' is a major exhibition at the V&A in South Kensington taking visitors into one of the world's great cities, exploring landmarks from the Hippodrome and Hagia Sophia to Topkapı Palace and the Galata Tower. It spans 1,600 years, from AD 330 to 1922, covering the city once called Constantinople and now Istanbul as the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. This is the first UK exhibition to tell this story in full, bringing rarely seen objects from the 4th century onwards, drawn from the V&A collection and national and international loans. Expect fine silks and textiles, ceramic tiles, mosaics, precious metalwork and jewellery, sculpture, manuscripts and paintings revealing the creative legacy of an imperial capital that shaped the Mediterranean world and beyond.
