About

An exhibition of paintings, drawings and collages by R. B. Kitaj, tracing how the American-born artist worked from fragments in the first half of his career. It shows how he gathered source material such as film stills, old book illustrations and thumbnail images from art historical scholarship, and turned these into new images dense with juxtaposition and ambiguity. Spanning 1958 to 1975, it includes significant large-scale paintings and collages, some of which even incorporate torn-up reproductions of his own works. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication with new research into his bricolage technique.
