About

A residency at Gasworks by the artist Thato Toeba, from Lesotho, opening on 30 September 2026. Toeba works with collage on plywood, using photographs as material in place of words to critique the archive as a supposedly neutral technology of remembering. During the residency they will experiment with puppetry and robotics to bring movement into collage, while researching the making of democracy and parliamentary systems, especially in Southern Africa. Their work asks how the othered and peripheralised enter the centre, and how collage through movement and frequency might take us there.
