About
A talk in the Soane Museum Study Group, an open forum where scholars present new research in architectural history or on the museum's collection. Dr Harry Adams, a curatorial and cataloguing trainee at Sir John Soane's Museum, reappraises John Soane's designs for the Insolvent Debtors' Court on Portugal Street, a building of 1821-25 that Dickens made famous as a 'badly lighted and worse ventilated' symbol of harsh insolvency laws. New cataloguing of the court's drawings reveals the compromises in its design and execution, and the talk asks whether it was really as bleak as its reputation. Afterwards, relevant drawings can be viewed in the Soane Museum Research Library.
