The Hafod Estate under the 4th Duke of Newcastle, 1832-1846
Society of Antiquaries, Mayfair
About
A lunchtime lecture at the Society of Antiquaries about the Hafod estate in Ceredigion during the ownership of the 4th Duke of Newcastle. The speaker is Dr Richard A. Gaunt FSA, a historian of British politics, culture and society. Drawing on the duke's recently edited personal diaries, it covers his motivations for buying and improving Hafod, his devotion to the picturesque principles of Thomas Johnes, and his efforts to run the estate well and keep it financially viable. It also shows how Newcastle, who considered himself an adopted Welshman, was forced to part with Hafod in the 1840s for financial reasons.
