About
The Time to Live and the Time to Die is a drama about a boy named Ah-Ha-Gu who comes of age during a tumultuous time in his family's history. Filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien drew the story from his own childhood. When the Gu family moved from China's mainland to Taiwan, the elder members struggled to adapt while the adolescent Ah-Ha thrived. As he grows to maturity, the generation gap grows fearsomely wide, threatening to alienate the young man from his family and their traditions.

Critics
8.2Very good
Critics praise the film's understated, precise visual style, its quiet emotional depth and its deeply personal, poetic treatment of growing up. They fault little, though some note its slow, uneventful pace and demanding restraint.
