About
Hollis Taggart's booth presentation at the ADAA fair, held at the Park Avenue Armory, shows work by two early students of Hans Hofmann who were among the few women in the first generation of New York Abstract Expressionists in the 1950s. Michael (Corinne) West was a prolific painter, poet and essayist active in the New York avant-garde from the mid-1940s, exhibiting alongside artists such as Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko. Japanese-born Teruko Yokoi moved to New York in 1955, and through friendships with Joan Mitchell, Kenzo Okada and Mark Rothko developed a lyrical abstraction that integrated East Asian landscape. The gallery aims to rectify the two women's omission from the understanding of Abstract Expressionism, highlighting their shared emphasis on the painterly process and the spiritual nature within abstraction.
