About
"Art is for the Spirit: Records of the Self" is a group exhibition at Paula Cooper Gallery at 521 West 21st Street, with an opening reception on October 29 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Organized by Ivy Shapiro, it brings together work by Jennifer Bartlett, Jonathan Borofsky, Robert Gober, David Hammons, Kazuko Miyamoto, Ree Morton, Elizabeth Murray, and Joel Shapiro. The exhibition explores the home and autobiography as tools for grounding the self, and underlines the interrelated lives of Paula Cooper, her artists and their families in the New York art world of the 1970s and beyond. Anchored in Shapiro's memories of her childhood, it includes works such as Shapiro's fingerprint drawings and house sculptures, Bartlett's dotted paintings, Gober's dollhouses, Hammons's body prints, Miyamoto's woven forms, and Morton's narrative drawings.
