Clark Fox: Beyond Obedience
Ethan Cohen Gallery, West 19th Street 251, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
"Clark Fox: Beyond Obedience" is a major solo exhibition surveying nearly six decades of work by the American artist Clark V. Fox at Ethan Cohen Gallery's 251 W 19th Street location in Chelsea. Curated by Jane Livingston, it follows the artist's 2022 retrospective "Subversion and Spectacle" at the Station Museum in Houston. The show traces a practice that moves between abstraction, Pop art, political painting and cultural critique, including his Washington Color School beginnings, his "architectural" paintings, and his ongoing series of George Washington, still-life icons like the orange and pear, and the character Mr. Peanut. Fox's increasing focus in recent decades on his Cherokee and Powhatan heritage and Native American history runs through the exhibition, alongside satirical takes on contemporary culture and eccentric sculptural pieces. An opening reception takes place on November 5 from 6 to 8 pm.
