From Monarchy to Modernity: Travel, Identity, & the Czechoslovak First Republic (1918–1938)
Poster House, West 23rd Street 119, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
An exhibition of seldom-seen Czechoslovak travel posters from the First Republic era of 1918 to 1938. It was curated by Nicholas D. Lowry, a New York City born authority on vintage posters who is President of Swann Auction Galleries and known for his appearances on the PBS television series Antiques Roadshow, with exhibition design by Mihoshi Fukushima Clark. The show explores how artists, designers, and commercial studios used travel posters as vehicles for soft power, presenting the new country formed after the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved as a land of opportunity, beauty, and progress. It is on view in the Entry Foyer, takes about 10 minutes to see, is rated G, and is held in conjunction with a related show at the Czech Center New York.
