About

"Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death" is an acclaimed seven-and-a-half-minute video work shown as an exhibition. It was made by visual artist, cinematographer, and film director Arthur Jafa, an American born in 1960. The video condenses the history and lived experience of Black life in the United States into a rapid, emotionally charged montage set to Kanye West's gospel-inflected track "Ultralight Beam." Combining found footage from films, news broadcasts, viral videos, and historical archives with Jafa's own material, it juxtaposes joy, creativity, and Black cultural achievement with documentation of violence and oppression.
