About

NYZ: Seiza Quiet-sitting & Dharma Talk on Shin Buddhism is a seiza meditation session with a dharma talk, held in person at New York Zendo Shobo-ji and open to everyone, with no registration required. It is led by Miki Nakura, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist minister based in New York who has practiced seiza for 30 years and shared it with students since 2004. Seiza (quiet sitting) was established in Japan more than 110 years ago by Okada Torajiro Sensei; it uses the traditional Japanese kneeling position or a chair, teaching balanced posture, correct breathing, and the flow of energy into the lower belly toward serenity of body-mind. Attendees are asked to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, avoid scented cosmetics, and keep devices silent.
