Hales Gallery, West 20th Street 547, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
"Shelley Niro: In Her Lifetime" is a solo exhibition of photographic works at Hales Gallery, with an opening reception on the evening of 24 September. It features the work of Shelley Niro, a multi-disciplinary artist of the Turtle Clan of the Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawk) Nation from the Six Nations of the Grand River territory. Spanning several decades, the show explores memory, identity, and contemporary Indigenous life through image, text, and ornament, centering the series In Her Lifetime (1992) and For Fearless and Other Indians (1998). Humor is at the heart of Niro's practice, questioning colonial narratives and stereotypical depictions of Indigenous identity.
