About
"The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution" is a major exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. It was developed in partnership with the Gotham Center for New York City History and turns the museum's entire third floor into a 7,000-square-foot immersive journey through Revolutionary-era New York. Visitors trace the city's role from the first sparks of rebellion in 1763 to its emergence as the new nation's first capital in 1790, through historical objects, multimedia installations, a recreated 18th-century tavern, a walk-through "Canvas Town," and scenes drawn from the video game Assassin's Creed III. The exhibition tells the stories of revolutionaries and loyalists, enslaved and free Black New Yorkers, women, and Native peoples, and shows how New Yorkers endured seven years of British occupation, fires, and battles before becoming residents of the nation's new capital.
