Being Hipp – First Lady of European Jazz
About
The documentary "Being Hipp – First Lady of European Jazz" portrays the German jazz pianist Jutta Hipp, the first European musician to release records on the legendary Blue Note label. It tells of her rise in the 1950s from Germany to New York, her break with the scene and her retreat into private life. More than a music biography, it is a portrait of self-assertion, artistic integrity and the price of female independence. The short film "Dream Baby Dream" screens beforehand, followed by a talk with director Anna Schmidt and Nadin Deventer, head of Jazzfest Berlin, in cooperation with Jazzfest Berlin.

Critics
The insightful interviews with contemporaries and experts are praised, along with rare recordings that give the film authenticity. The straightforward retelling of her life is seen as less compelling than those conversations.
