Biesdorfer Medizinische Gespräche
Schloss Biesdorf, Alt-Biesdorf 55, 12683 Berlin, Biesdorf
About
A lecture by Dr. Heinrich Niemann on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and the doctors' movement IPPNW for the prevention of nuclear war. The series is held in cooperation between the Leibniz-Sozietät zu Berlin e.V., the Berliner Medizinische Gesellschaft e.V. and Campus Berlin-Buch GmbH with Schloss Biesdorf. Niemann was managing director of the GDR section of the IPPNW from 1986 to 1990; that peace organisation was founded in 1980 during the Cold War and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. The talk presents the lasting effects of the atomic bomb explosions, the rising danger of nuclear war and the struggle for the UN nuclear weapons ban treaty, with a historical look at the GDR section up to its merger with the West German section in 1991.
