Somatic Circuits: art installation on shared breathing.
About
Somatic Circuits is an interactive art-science installation that turns research on bioelectronic implants into a shared sensory experience. It was created through a collaboration between the Dutch/South African artist Marlot Meyer, the curator Pierre Wolter from the Gallery Art Claims Impulse, and scientists from the research group Technologies for Bioelectronics and the Circular Design Lab at Fraunhofer IZM, funded by the Fraunhofer "Arts, Science and Design" programme. Visitors wear inflatable devices that react to breathing and connect participants through sound and gentle electrical stimulation, so one person's breathing influences the sensations others feel. A large inflatable sculpture acts as a "central neuron", visualising the collective activity of the group.
