About
A matinee combining a screening of „Transport aus dem Paradies“ with the ensuing talk „Die Enkelinnen“. The multi-award-winning Czechoslovak film, directed by Zbyněk Brynych in 1962, is based on Arnošt Lustig's story „Nacht und Hoffnung“ and is set in 1944 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where the Nazis had a propaganda film made that pretended a normal camp life with fulfilling work and rich cultural activity, while all participants were afterwards deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp, to which the title bitterly ironicly alludes. In the talk, Eva Lustigová, daughter of Arnošt Lustig, and Jacqueline Gies, granddaughter of the personal secretary of Karl Hermann Frank, a key figure of the Nazi terror in the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, speak, moderated by Aya Zarfati and Dr. Wolfgang Schwarz. The event is a cooperation of the Gedenk- und Bildungsstätte Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz with the Arnošt Lustig Stiftungsfonds, the Kulturreferat für die böhmischen Länder im Adalbert Stifter Verein, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Berlin and the Czech Centre Berlin, funded by the Deutsch-Tschechischer Zukunftsfonds.
