About
“Um|Benennen – Neukölln und seine Straßennamen” is a temporary exhibition about the streets of Berlin's Neukölln district and how they came by their names. It is a joint project of the Aktives Museum Faschismus und Widerstand in Berlin e. V. and the Arbeitskreis Berliner Regionalmuseen, with support from the LOTTO-Stiftung Berlin and the Berliner Senat (BKF). Nine chapters lay out the social, political and historical backgrounds behind the naming and renaming of streets in Neukölln, while also raising present-day questions about the names of streets and squares, with a special focus on five prominent neighbourhoods of the district. The exhibition likewise addresses namesakes whose thinking and actions are at odds with today's democratic understanding, and the political negotiations in the district parliament that respond to civil society calls for renaming.
