About

A Whistle in the Dark is a play about a criminal family of Irish immigrants from County Mayo who settle in Coventry in the 1960s, exploring violence, family and tribal loyalty and generational brutality. Written by Tom Murphy, it is directed by Caitríona McLaughlin in a co-production with Ireland's Abbey Theatre and stars Paul Mescal as Michael Carney, the eldest son who tries to escape the cycle of violence by fleeing to England and marrying an English woman. First premiered in 1961 in London, it is an unflinching look at the Irish immigrant experience and generational trauma.
