Adeela Suleman: The Rising Crescendo of the Band Baja
Grosvenor Gallery, Mayfair
About
An exhibition of new works by the Pakistani artist Adeela Suleman, presented by Grosvenor Gallery in collaboration with Canvas Gallery, Karachi. It centres on the spectacle of the South Asian band baja, with drummers, trumpeters and uniformed bandsmen appearing amid forests, flowers and wild animals in celebratory, dreamlike scenes. Working in repoussé metalwork and textile, Suleman explores the layered histories of ceremonial bands and the tensions between pageantry and power, with a major textile work linking the independence movements of India and Ireland.
