About

Cloud 9 is a landmark play by Caryl Churchill, a playful exploration of themes of gender, sexuality, and power, staged at the Lyttelton Theatre. Directed by Dominic Cooke, it portrays identity through time: the first half is set in Victorian colonial Africa, where administrator Clive rules his household with strict expectations, while desire and dissatisfaction seep beneath the family's orderly exterior. Churchill then sends the characters, aged only 25 years more, into 1970s London, where they must decide what parts of their traditional ways of life to leave behind. A cast including Rebecca Humphries, Eloka Ivo, Tom Mothersdale, Charlotte Ritchie, Ellen Robertson, Stuart Thompson, and Sam Troughton takes on multiple roles across the play's two eras.
