About

An evening conversation and live podcast recording celebrating Hertha Ayrton, the Royal Society Hughes Medal-winner who was an inventor, engineer, suffragette and firefighter. It is hosted by broadcaster Claudia Hammond with Dame Polina Bayvel FRS and Helen Arney, from Lost Women of Science, the award-winning podcast about unheralded female scientists in history. The interactive discussion blends science, history, music and storytelling, covering how she made electric lighting safer, invented a fan to disperse poisonous gas from WWI trenches, her relationship with the Royal Society, and the bonds between her science and social activism.
