About

An art exhibition titled 'Sam Jackson: What Remains of Her' at Pontone Gallery. The artist Sam Jackson paints portraits of queens, princesses and other women of historical note, from Cleopatra to Boudicca to Queen Victoria. Since these women cannot be painted from life, the likenesses are conjured from secondary sources, folk tale and the artist's imagination. The works use a uniform head-and-shoulders format with loose, gestural brushwork, letters and phrases scattered across the picture plane.
