About

An exhibition at Tina Kim Gallery dedicated to the painter Kim Tschang-Yeul, his third solo show there. It focuses on works from the 1980s through the 2010s by the Korean émigré painter, who spent five decades exploring luminous, hyperrealistic waterdrops. At its center is his Recurrence series, begun in the mid-1980s, shown alongside Waterdrop paintings that trace his move toward a more tactile materiality, varied surfaces, and larger scale. For Kim, the repeated depiction of waterdrops was a means of working through memories of violence and loss from the Korean War, informed by Taoist and Zen Buddhist thought.
